Day 181

My Spatial Perceptions: Color & Light class took a field trip to Providence Place Mall today to look at good and bad lighting/color schemes. There's a lot of bad (JC Penney, Macy's), but there's also a lot of good (Crate & Barrel I'm looking at you!). Unfortunately no pictures were allowed due to mall policy. Boooo.

Afterwards we visited Gracie's restaurant to look at their well-designed lighting scheme courtesy of one of my professors. Gracie's treated us to macaroons and milk.



If you give a grad student a macaroon...they're going to ask to see your light fixtures!

Day 180

This is some lighting homework from earlier this week. We had to take a building material (I chose a textile) and recreate the surface and perceived hues using photoshop. We also did color scales based off the hue/tint/shade variations to the original CMYK mixes. Unfortunately the color scan of the fabric doesn't show too well on these jpeg. Printed out, the CMYK matches came pretty close.

Day 179 CAD

Our semester long project in CAD is a model of an existing residence. I chose Shigeru Ban's 2/5 house. I first stumbled on this house in a book called Interiorscapes about water and garden features inside homes. I was going through a green thumb/horticulture phase that lasted a few months. I even took a night class on horticulture. Then i got interested in learning spanish or something and plants fell by the wayside.

Anywho, this house rocks and I'm looking forward to working on it. Even if my first choice was Ray Kappe's residence in Los Angeles.

Day 178 Con't

Today marks the start of the Make It Better Symposium at RISD. The symposium will analyze the future of healthcare and its relationship to art and design. Very exciting. Learn more about Make It Better HERE.

I'm all registered and set to attend. I'm actually sitting in the auditorium waiting for the opening remarks from RISD's president, John Maeda and US Assistant Secretary of Health, Dr. Howard Koh.

Days 176-178

I'm just about caught up on sleep from Monday's workallnight fest. More photos of the entire project this weekend. Here's a quick shot of the 1/2" scale model. I learned a lot from this model. I learned not to make a 1/2" model.

The view STILL hasn't changed, but our project is due tomorrow. I haven't had more than 3 hours sleep the past three nights.

Day 169

Our 2-week studio project at the Artisan Cafe is moving right along. Here's what I presented in class today.

Boards that sum up research







Visual exploration and floor plan of a concept involving the shape of the Providence River and how it has changed from 1600-now. I'm using that shape on the floor to inform a walking path for patrons.



The current location of the pattern is going to shift. Right now it just looks like the bathrooms are flooding. Thank you class crit for pointing that out.



I'm still working on re-using sailcloths near the ceiling to bring down the ceiling visually and create a RISD community project.

We have a ton. of. stuff. to get ready for the presentation to RISD's director of dining next Tuesday. I have to stop typing to go work on it.

Day 168: Field Trip!

Our Building Systems Interface class took a field trip today to Providence Career and Technical Academy. The building was just finished last year and is certified under CHPS: The Collaborative for High Performance Schools. The building engineer gave our class a terrific tour of the automated HVAC systems at work in the building.

Everything in this building is geared toward the thermal comfort and environmental safety of the staff and students.
